![]() ![]() MAC Addresses have, for historical reasons, a number of alternative names including Ethernet Address, Hardware Address, Physical Address and Layer 2 Address. The Product Identifier is then assigned by the manufacturer in such a way as to guarantee all its products have a unique number. The OUI or Organisationally Unique Identifier is assigned by the IEEE to each manufacturer of network equipment. What is a MAC Address MAC address is a unique identifier that is assigned to a NIC (Network Interface Controller/ Card). This can be achieved using ARP in IPv4 networks. To find these addresses on Mac OS X: Choose System Preferences and then Network Click on Ethernet to find the settings for a cable connection (such as ResNet). To be able to send traffic on an ethernet network, you must know the MAC address of the destination. MAC stands for Media Access Control, and are used in ethernet networks. The bit organisation of the MAC Address is shown in the diagram below: MAC address is a unique identifier for a physical network interface. The MAC Address is a 48-bit number and by convention is written as six hexadecimal numbers separated by colons, e.g.Ī trailing subscript is sometimes added to clarify the number base: A MAC address consists of six sets of two. This address is globally unique and is assigned by the IEEE.Įach Media Access Control has one MAC Address but can have multiple IP Addresses. MAC stands for Media Access Control, and each identifier is intended to be unique to a particular device. Every Media Access Control has a MAC Address that allows it to be identified. This is the low level network connection. ![]()
